Benedicta | Ghana

Barely Making It

As Benedicta graduated from university and began to approach the adult world for the first time, her father suffered a crisis in his business that significantly impacted her family. At the time, she was away from home, doing her tour of national service in Kumasi, Ghana. It was out of the question to ask her family for money, as she didn’t want to burden them in a difficult time. She set out to find her own way.

She chose to search for jobs in customer service because she thought that would be the easiest path to employment. This did not turn out to be the case. She sent “countless applications,” with little to no response. Those who did respond, explained that she was missing the necessary skill-set.

Meanwhile, back home, her five siblings and parents were surviving on just one meal a day. It was very painful for Benedicta to watch them suffer, without being able to help in any way. Indeed, she herself was in dire straits. She was not eating much either, and began to lose weight and to suffer from anemia. She shared a small room with a friend. While awaiting word from potential employers, she received threats from her landlord for failing to pay rent on time.

“All of my problems at that time boiled down to money. I was struggling to survive,” she shared.

As things progressed in a bad direction, Benedicta refused to call home, and add to their burdens. “I thought I was all alone. I just wanted someone to reach out and ask: are you okay? What’s going on?”

Finding Hope

It was in this dark time that Benedicta found Generation Ghana. She joined the customer service training program, which promised to hold her hand through the job search. She felt the rigorous training helped her stand out among her peers, while finally receiving the support she had longed for. “Generation gave me that sense of belonging. I felt I had people to run to. It gave me hope.”

On the day she graduated from the program, she completed an in-person mock interview that came at just the right moment to boost her confidence. That same night, around 7 p.m., the call came: a real interview with a company she had applied to. This time, she had no fear. The offer letter soon followed. “It felt as if a burden had been lifted off my shoulder. I would be able to support the people that I love and care about. It was actually the best night.”

Supporting Herself and her Family

Today, Benedicta is a Customer Service Representative at Ubiquiti, where she was named overall best trainee soon after being hired, a distinction she credits directly to her Generation training.

Her salary now supports her younger brother through university and helps her sisters when expenses threaten to overwhelm them. When anyone in her family faces financial distress, she is the first person they call, a role she embraces. “Caring about others is something that I stand for.”

She walks through life with a newfound sense of security, and feels connected to her purpose. She is saving toward her next goal: a place of her own. She finds fulfillment in her job, and feels she is moving forward in life.

“Everything happened like magic, just because I had the right training at the right time. Generation has really helped me. It’s been a massive change,” she shares.
