Giulia | Brazil

Giulia is 21 years old, and was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil where she still lives with her parents, and younger brother. At 16, even before finishing school, she began working, not only to cover her own expenses but also to help with the family bills. Her parents once made a living from event decorations, but after the pandemic reduced demand, her mother took up some accounting work, and her father found occasional jobs here and there. Neither had a stable income.

For four years, Giulia managed social media accounts for a small tech company. But with a low salary, no benefits, and ongoing workplace challenges, she grew increasingly discouraged.

Hoping for a better future, she started saving to apply to a private university, but she was fired before she could put her plan into action.

Unsure of her next step, Giulia began preparing for entrance exams to a public university tech program, applying with modest hopes. During her studies, she discovered Generation Brazil’s JavaScript Developer program, funded by the MetLife Foundation, a turning point in her journey.

Opening doors

“At first, I thought it was too good to be true. But after researching, I realized it was a real opportunity right in front of me, so I took it with my parents’ support, since I wouldn’t have an income for at least three months.”

During the program, Giulia not only acquired JavaScript skills, but also experienced a breakthrough in her social confidence and personal growth.

“You wouldn’t believe it, but I used to avoid any form of social contact for a long time. At Generation, though, I felt comfortable, accepted, and respected for who I am.”

While attending Generation, Giulia learned both Java and JavaScript, and took full advantage of the program’s resources. She connected with employers, built her portfolio and CV, and honed her interview and networking abilities. Simultaneously, she was accepted into a university program in Systems Analysis and Development, which meant that she had to juggle intensive training during the day with university classes in the evening. Despite the demanding schedule, she persevered and succeeded.

New beginning

She proudly shares that, thanks to Generation, she landed an internship at a data center company in November.

“I tell everyone I can about Generation’s program because I’m genuinely grateful for how much it has changed my life. Now, I have an internship I love and hope to turn into a full-time career. I’m studying what excites me, and I can support myself. It’s incredible how much can change in just one year.”
