Six Years of Struggle

After graduating with a degree in Geophysical Engineering in 2018, Alejandra spent six years searching for stability. The limited job market for geophysicists led to a series of temporary contracts and periods of unemployment. “I didn’t have the connections or network to really find my way into the industry.” 

The financial strain was real. “When I was unemployed, I couldn’t leave my house much, I couldn’t buy clothes, or do much of anything, because I didn’t have money.” 

After trying various solutions—a second degree, a data science diploma, temporary consulting work—she reached a breaking point. “I got to a point where I felt very tired. I said ‘God, please, enough.’ I would cry like ‘I’m tired of searching and searching.’” Beyond the practical challenges, Alejandra began to lose faith in herself, questioning her worth. 

Six years went by as she struggled to stay afloat. 

Finding Generation

Alejandra discovered Generation’s free web development bootcamp online. What drew her in wasn’t just the technical training: “There are few places I know of that offer something like Generation, which invests not only in the technical part, but also about the mindset, the soft skills, which is very much needed when looking for employment.”

Importantly, the program was also free, which was crucial for Ale, who after 6 years had exhausted her resources. 

The Breakthrough

Just before graduating the program, she began to interview with different companies. She was astounded by the sheer number of interview requests she received. 

Then came the breakthrough week: “In the same week I did two interviews, one was at HSBC and another place, and I got both of them!” Ale was overjoyed. After some consultation with her Generation mentor, she chose the role at HSBC. 

Today, Alejandra has achieved the stability she sought: “Because of Generation, and with the job I now have, I was able to achieve a sense of ease, and peace of mind. And, of course, financial stability—stability in every sense.” She can now cover her basic needs, save for retirement, invest in her interests, like singing lessons, and contribute to her family.

One day her manager, impressed by Alejandra’s performance, asked her to connect the company with Generation, as they needed to make a few hires. As a result, almost half of Ale’s team is from Generation now. “It’s amazing to build something together, especially knowing we’ve walked a similar path to get here.”
