Searching for Stability

After earning her degree in geophysical engineering, Alejandra struggled to find stable opportunities in her field. Despite securing a six-month contract, long-term employment remained elusive. Determined to pivot toward a more sustainable career, she began studying Informatics, but transitioning into tech proved harder than expected. “For two years, I juggled my studies with short-term contracts and periods of unemployment, wondering how to transition to a career in technology without losing myself and having a well-paid job. Not feeling financially independent left me stressed, and I felt social pressure despite my family’s support. I wanted to find stability and purpose.”

A period of travel gave her space to reflect and reconnect with herself. “I rediscovered my passions: technology, science and art. I wanted to create and be part of something meaningful that could align with long-term financial stability.” With renewed focus, she began exploring new options. A friend who had graduated from a Generation program encouraged her to apply. The timing felt right.

Rediscovering Purpose Through Community and Learning

Alejandra joined Generation Mexico’s Java Full Stack Developer program – a special women-only cohort designed to promote gender equity in the tech sector. The experience, she says, was transformative. “The environment was incredibly supportive. Learning alongside women with similar goals helped me feel safe, empowered, and ready to grow, both technically and personally. We still keep in touch.

She was impressed by the structure and depth of the bootcamp. “I thought it would be just another course, but it was so well planned. The hands-on experience, field-technical projects, and interview prep made a huge difference. It helped me connect the dots, pass technical interviews, and feel ready for the job.

For Alejandra, Generation was about more than just technical skills. It gave her confidence, tools, and mentors who guided her through the career transition process. “My mentor helped me believe in myself again. She helped me understand that all my past experience was important and was guiding me toward a path more aligned with who I am. She walked me through writing my CV, preparing for interviews, and learning how to communicate my value. She reminded me that every interview, whether I got the job or not, was a learning opportunity.”

Just before graduating, Alejandra began applying for jobs. About a month after graduation, she received two job offers within the same week. “When they called to say I’d been selected, it felt incredible. I was proud of myself, surprised at how far I’d come thanks to my own effort and Generation’s support. Then I had to decide which opportunity to choose!

Building a Career and Lifting Others Along the Way

Alejandra chose to join HSBC Mexico as a Web Production Officer, a role that perfectly aligned with her professional goals of combining her creative and design skills with her analytical and logical side, along with her desire for stability, growth, and a supportive work environment. “My job allows me to cover my expenses, save, and even enjoy a few perks, like traveling with my parents, who are now retired and enjoying their well-deserved time.

She’s also planning for the long term. “I want to hire a financial advisor, something my company offers, to help me set savings goals for personal projects like traveling or pursuing a master’s degree, and to plan for retirement.”

The role also offers the flexibility to keep exploring her personal interests, like singing, and academic passions, which Alejandra deeply values. “I’ve always loved learning, and I’m so glad I don’t have to choose between my job and my curiosity. Right now, I’m taking a quantum computing course at the bank, which combines two of my biggest passions: physics and informatics. I’m really grateful for these opportunities, they help me stay connected to science and innovation in my work and keep growing without leaving any part of myself behind.”

Today, Alejandra is not just building her own future, she’s helping others do the same. “My team has been growing, and I’ve recommended other women from Generation Mexico to join. Half of my team are Generation alumni. It’s amazing to build something together, especially knowing we’ve walked a similar path to get here.

Grateful for the opportunity that helped her transform her life, Alejandra is now giving back to the Generation community in a new way: as a member of the 2025 Global Alumni Ambassadors Council. “I feel like I’ve finally found the stability and purpose I was looking for. Generation gave me the tools and the community, but most importantly,  it reminded me of my own potential. I want to help others feel the same.
