Stalled Dreams in a Small Town

Growing up in the small town of Clarksburg, West Virginia, there weren’t many opportunities to find a high-growth job in the corporate world. Alex was ambitious—and not long after graduating university, landed on corporate sales as her chosen career path. Yet, despite the university degree, sending out scores of applications, networking, and even watching YouTube videos about how to improve her resume and interview skills, Alex was getting nowhere.

In the years following her university graduation, Alex worked retail jobs, including a stint as a part-time pharmacy technician, and experienced bouts of unemployment, as well. All the while, she tried to land an entry-level opportunity in corporate sales, but with no success.

“I wasn’t making a lot of money. I was living with my parents. At first it was like, oh you just need a college degree. Well, I got that, now what? Then it was like, well you need experience. Well, how do I get experience if no one will hire me? It made me feel like, ‘what am I doing wrong?’ It was very discouraging,” she shared.

Finally, A Way In

Alex may have felt discouraged, but she persevered. She began looking for certificate programs in sales, hoping that would give her a leg up. She couldn’t find any—until she came across Generation United State’s SaaS Sales Development Representative program. “I was all over it!” She told us.

For Alex, the best part of the Generation program was the 1:1 mentorship. After years of lonely job searching, “It felt like someone was pushing the bike for me,” She explained. She got her confidence back up. And the mindset and behavioral skills she learned will serve her for years to come in life (not just in work), for the rest of her life, she shared.

Starting an Independent Life in a New City

Just four weeks after graduating from the program, Alex secured her dream job in the technology world.

“Everything is possible, now, with the salary I’m earning,” she told us. She moved to Nashville, Tennessee, and is now living in a big city, on her own, for the first time. She is able to take trips with friends, pay off student loans, and still have money left over to save.

She is especially excited about the growth opportunities at her new company, where, “The sky’s the limit. It’ll just continue and continue,” she told us.
