Building a New Future with Big Dreams and New Skills

Before Emily found Generation, despite her hard work, she was facing challenges building a sustainable career.

Born in Togo, she moved to Ghana in search of better opportunities after struggling to find work in her home country, even with a degree in finance and accounting.

“I stayed home for a year after graduation and couldn’t find a job. I moved to Ghana and started doing hairstyling, one of my passions, to survive.”

For years, she worked as a hairstylist in salons. But eventually, a physical challenge – a limp on her right leg – made standing all day difficult. She had to give it up. Later, she started managing a salon, including the salon’s online presence. This sparked a new passion: social media.

Turning a Passion Into a Future Career

“I discovered I loved managing the salon’s online presence, like creating content and attracting customers. That’s when I realized digital marketing could be my future.”

When she saw a YouTube ad for Generation Ghana’s Digital Marketing program, she almost didn’t believe it.

“At first, I thought it was a scam. It was free, and that felt too good to be true. But the application process was so detailed and serious, I decided to give it a try and I realized it was real.”

During the 13-week intensive training program Emily immersed herself in learning SEO, content creation, and marketing strategy. She even discovered her new goal: becoming a digital marketing consultant.

“Generation gave me skills I never thought I could gain outside a university. I became confident with the help of my mentor, I had a direction, and a new career path.”

Emily chose the freelance track, and with mentorship and support from Generation, she soon landed her first paying client, an environmental NGO. She continued chasing her dreams, and her life took an exciting turn.

Where is Emily now?

Emily is working full-time at Generation, supporting the organisation that transformed her life.

“It’s exciting and humbling. I was a learner, and now I’m on the other side, using the same skills I gained to support Generation’s mission.”

Later in her career, Emily hopes to launch a beauty complex, offering makeup, hairstyling, and spa services while continuing to grow as a digital marketing consultant.

“My goal is to save and build a business while helping others. Generation didn’t just give me skills, it gave me hope.”
